With more than 20 years’ experience advising small business owners, Matthew Edmonds brings deep expertise, genuine care and a practical, real‑world perspective to his role as Partner.
Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs running diverse businesses from farming and hospitality to retail and franchising, Matthew gained early firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities facing small business owners. This foundation, combined with his passion for economics and business studies, naturally led him to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce and a career in accounting and business advisory. Matthew began his professional journey with a national mid‑tier firm in Sydney, where he developed broad industry experience and a strong technical grounding. In 2016, he returned to Newcastle with his wife and was drawn to Cutcher & Neale’s reputation, values and client‑focused approach. He has been an integral part of the firm ever since, working closely with clients to support their long‑term growth and financial clarity. Matthew is known for forming enduring relationships built on trust, integrity and genuine support. He takes the time to deeply understand each client’s goals, acting as a reliable sounding board and ensuring they stay on the right path. His commitment to professionalism was recognised in 2023 when he received the prestigious Geof Neale Award for professionalism and integrity, an honour made even more meaningful as it was presented by Geof’s son, former Partner Ian Neale. Colleagues and clients describe Matthew in three words: trustworthy, supportive, and principled. Outside of work, he has a keen interest in music and enjoys playing several instruments, though he modestly admits he doesn’t claim to play any of them particularly well.
