Ostendo – Future Releases

Development-X did a "soft" release of Update 242 in July 2021.

Our team put in place a controlled roll out of this update as there are some database changes that we were advised might affect some custom scripts. Hence our prudent approach to updating and strong recommendation we test your custom developments. To date we have uncovered in our pre upgrade testing less than a handful of scripts affected. Whilst this update had some major "front of house" feature releases like container tracking, a lot of the changes have been "under the hood" such as addressing screen resolution scaling issues and database speed improvements. At the time of writing, current build is 182 published 9/5/2022.

Updates 243 and 244 are already in development and we will outline below what has been communicated to us by Development-X.

Update 243 will lay the foundation to move Ostendo to a SaaS cloud solution. Once finalised, Ostendo will use HTTPS rather than TCP/IP. At this point we do not have an expected release date and there will need to be some technical changes in how Ostendo is deployed into a Public or Private cloud. We will provide you with more information as it comes to hand; however, we expect a 6+ month release date with no expectation this will be met. However, this is currently their primary focus and they are fairly advanced in the development process.

Update 244 will provide the option to run Ostendo with Firebird v3. Testing by Development-X has been extensive and now the technical changes within Ostendo are being put in place. Additional settings will need to be added to give Ostendo users the option to continue to use Firebird v2.5 or upgrade to Firebird v3. The advantage of using Firebird v3 is greatest for sites with 20+ users and larger database(s) as v3 utilises the server resources more effectively.

Some users will recall the update from Firebird v1.3 to v2.5 and note that like the previous update, Firebird versions are not backward compatible and once the database is upgraded it cannot be reversed.
